AstroDay Friends Tour
April 20, 2007 • Nawahi'okalaniopu'u School, Radio Bay, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center

This year we are honored with the participation of several organizations and institutes from the mainland. Among them are Dr Nancy Maryboy of the Indigenous Astronomy Institute, Dr Isabel Hawkins (University of California Berkeley Sun-Earth Connection), Pepe Huchim (Yucatec Maya, Centro INAH Yucatan, Mexico), Dr Cassandra Runyon (College of Charleston), Kay Ferrari (NASA JPL), Eddie Gonzales (NASA JPL), Brian
Grigsby (Mars Education Program at Arizona State University) and Rachel Ross (Las Cumbres Observatory). The day started with students from Nawahi'okalaniopu'u Hawaiian immersion school chanting us onto campus. Students then led a tour that showcased their efforts to maintain balance in the ecosystem of plants and animals. The group moved on to Hilo Harbor, where they boarded Hokualaka'i with crew members Ah Lun Yung and Mona Shintani. No one fell into the water so we ventured over to the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center for a walk through the exhibit hall and enjoy a planetarium show. The weather was grand (after a week of rain) and we had a great time together before AstroDay (calm before the storm?).
