IfA Advanced Technology Resource Center Dedication

The name of the new Institute for Astronomy (IfA) Advanced Technology Research Center in Kula, Maui is Maikalani. The name literally means "from the heavens", but also has the cultural meaning "things we gain from the cosmos". Maikalani promises to be the gathering place in Upcountry Maui for academic, government, and industry partners as they develop new technology for the study of the cosmos. The event was opened with an oli by Kahu Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell, Sr. Speeches were given by IfA Director Rolf Kudritzki, UH Regent Dr Marlene Hapai, UH Vice Chancellor for Research Gary Ostrander, Honorable Mayor of Maui Charmaine Tavares, Honorable State Senator Roslyn Baker and IfA Associate Director of Haleakala Dr Jeff Kuhn. the facility was opened up to the public for an Open House that featured mini-talks by several IfA researchers, and demonstrations on optics, infrared imaging and liquid nitrogen.
