Hawaii's Magnificent Night Skies:
Protecting a Precious Resource
Richard Wainscoat. UH Institute for Astronomy

Although the sky over the Big Island is protected by a strong county lighting ordinance, population growth is leading to light pollution, the Big Island's dark night sky is becoming endangered. Light pollution - the adverse effects of man-made lighting - will be explained, and images of the Big Island from the International Space Station was used to reveal the major sources of light pollution on the Big Island. The talk explained how the dark sky can be restored and protected so that this precious resource can be enjoyed by residents and visitors well into the future.
