Asteroids 101: A Pan-STARRS Primer
John Hamilton, UHH Physics & Astronomy
Heather Kaluna, Pan-STARRS Student Intern

What exactly are Asteroids? Where are they? How many are there? How big are they? What are they made of? Do you need to see a doctor if you get one? Why do some astronomers despise them and call them "Vermin of the Sky", while other astronomers make their careers on them?
UH-Hilo Dept of Astronomy & Physics has been invited by UH-Manoa's Institute for Astronomy to be a Partner Institute with the PanSTARRS project. PanSTARRS (the Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System) will be an all-sky survey telescope system, repeatedly re-imaging the entire sky. The accumuated data-set will be useful in many ways, first and foremost as a means to discover and (later) monitor potential celestial collisions between asteroids and the Earth.
