Hearts of Darkness: Black Holes in Space
Alex Filippenko - University of California, Berkeley

Astronomers have recently discovered numerous black holes -- regions of space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape! These come in several varieties: stellar-mass black holes formed by the collapse of massive stars, supermassive black holes in the nuclei of galaxies, and, most recently, intermediate-mass black holes that appear to reside in the centers of some compact star clusters. Black holes are no longer restricted to the domain of science-fiction writers and theoretical physicists! Come learn about the properties of these bizarre objects.
