Hawaiian Starlight: A Time-lapse Essay on Mauna Kea
Jean-Charles Cuillandre, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope
Mauna Kea offers striking lighting conditions but time always seems to stand still: only the magic of time-lapse cinematography can bring the beautiful effects of the passing of time to our human perception: clouds intricately curl up with the mountain, stars drift over moonlit landscapes, light transitions subtly at dusk, dawn, moonset and moonrise. Intermixed within these time-lapse clips are animated sequences of stunning images of the cosmos captured by the CFHT for its yearly wall calendar. The entire film is paced to a beautiful and inspiring musical score. The result of a time-consuming hobby (the filming started in 2001), the film will be preceded by a short presentation of the history of the project, both from a technical and creative viewpoint.
