Deep Impact / Faulkes Telescope Educator Workshop • Maui
Saturday, February 26, 2005
About a dozen Maui Island educators attended a UH Astrobiology Institute workshop at the Maui Community College campus to learn about the NASA Deep Impact mission and the Faulkes Telescope. Karen Meech delivered a presentation on the mission that will place an impact probe into the path of a comet on Sunday, July 3rd. Maui IfA Systems Engineer Bill Giebink shared information about registering to use the Faulkes Telescope, and Jim Bedient instructed the attendees on use of the 2 meter science grade telescope dedicated to education and public outreach. Icelandic partners delivered presentations describing some of their research, while their colleagues tuned in via videoconferencing. Sharon Price, Kalaheo High School teacher discussed some of the astronomy science projects her students have undertaken in the past. After the workshop and pizza, everyone got in vans and ascended to the summit of Haleakala, where they toured the Faulkes Telescope and adjoining area. This IfA outreach event was even featured in the Maui News the following Sunday. Kudos to IfA Manoa Curriculum Development Specialist Mary Kadooka for her work in coordinating the program.
