Hilo Youth Robotics Camp 2006
Summer 2006 • Connections Charter School, Hilo

Student instructors from Rensellaer Polytechnic Institute (nation's oldest engineering college) are in Hilo to teach a robotics summer camp to youngsters 9-13 during three separate, two-week, half-day sessions. Many thanks to Connections Public Charter School, AstroDay Institute, UH Institute for Astronomy, Hawaii Island Economic Development Board and Hawaii County Department of Research & Development. The program also provides training to teachers and parents in robotics alongside the students, with the goal of helping establish robotics after-school programs at their respective elementary and middle schools.

Mayor Harry Kim Visits Hilo Youth Robotics
We are very pleased to have welcomed Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim to our camp, where he got a chance to see our summer enrichment program in action with students and teachers from around Hawaii Island receiving instruction from our facilitators Aasish Kabra and Clarynne Ishikawa from Rensellaer Polytechnic Institute.

Hilights of the Hilo Youth Robotics workshops in 2006
Kurt Jarrett of Connections Charter School working with some of the girls in session 1 Clarynne working with teams of practicing robots and programmers Kehau Kalili of Nawahi assisting some students during a free build session Working together to program a bot through a maze
Groups share their robots and experience building them with the rest of the participants There were a lot of creative and interesting robots designed and built by the girls Students programming their robot on a computer A group shot of our all-girl session after the first day of the workshop
Students undergo the process of engineering: design, fabrication, testing, modifications... Robot inspired abstract art Mr Kodani observes as this group records light sensor readings on and off the white line Explaining how their robot could draw a perfect equilateral triangles
Melissa offers Jade-Ann some help with her robot These girls are having far too much fun with their Lego farm with animals That is a little Crocodile robot with a little Steve Irwin (the Crocodile Hunter) Boy's turn in session 2. A little robot free-build before the second day of the workshop

Practical (and not so Practical) Applications of Robotics Demonstrations
Student Assistants Noa and Reyn demonstrate a maze solving robot Demonstration of a pair of Parallax Sumo Robots wrestling each other in the ring Kiyo showing "Cubie", the Waiakea High School underwater ROV robot - just add H2O Reyn demonstrating his photovore robot
Student Assistant Noa demonstrates the Mechamo Crab and Centipede for students Noa demonstrating his home-built multiplexer Agyei demonstrating the RoboSapien V2 biped robot for the boys in session number 2 Robot Fighting League founding member Steve Judd demos an antweight wedge
Steve Judd and his truly amazing collection of robots. Steve described each of his bots to the class, and demonstrated several of them, including the bipedal, humanoid robot that could dance, do pushups and even the splits on command, and combat bots of various weight classes.
