AstroDay Festival 2008 Highlights
AstroDay featured over 50 exhibits, demonstrations and activity areas throughout Prince Kuhio Plaza, including the observatories on Mauna Kea, educators, students, Hawaiian culture groups and commercial vendors. Musical performances by Waiakea Intermediate School Ukulele Band, Grammy Award recipients Cyril Pahinui, George Kahumoku, Keoki Kahumoku and John Keawe. The AstroDay Excellence in Teaching award was presented to Kea'au Middle School science teacher Shellea Maeda-Hata. AstroDay featured Lego, underwater ROV, VEX and FIRST scholastic robotics teams from around Hawaii island. Starlab planetarium shows, Kids Corner and many interactive, kid-friendly stations located throughout the mall. Despite the rain and several other events, over 12,000 visitors attended AstroDay this year. Here are some pictures of the festivities:

Excellence in Teaching Award Presentation
The AstroDay Excellence in Teaching award recognizes Hawaii Island K-12 teachers and university professors whose creativity and enthusiasm engage students in science curricula in exciting and meaningful ways. This year's recipient is Shellea Maeda-Hata of Kea'au Middle School. Congratulations Shellea, and mahalo to the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce (HICC) and its President Bob Williams, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawaii (JCCIH) and its President Phoebe Lambeth, and Representative Clift Tsuji for their support of this award. In addition to receiving a personal trophy, Shellea receives a weekend getaway at the Palms Cliffhouse Inn and a $500 cash award courtesy of Big Island Toyota.

The Prize Winners
There were a number of lucky winners at AstroDay this year. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to OfficeMax, Leiahi Productions, and especially Software Bisque, Celestron Telescopes and Meade Instrument Corporation for their generous support of our event.

Congratulations to Ric Yamamoto and Tracy Kaneshiro, winners of our grand prize telescopes. Ric has won before at AstroDay, while Tracy has been trying to win for the past several years.

AstroDay Star Party • Visitor Information Station on Mauna Kea
This year, we are appreciative of the support from the West Hawaii Astronomy Club (WHAC), who facilitated views of the night sky above the Visitor Information Station through their member telescopes. They were joined by members of the Haleakala Amateur Astronomers and Hilo Astronomy Club.
