The second 'Imi Na'auao - Wayfinding Skills workshop was held March 22-25 at various locations including the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, Ke Kula o Nawahiokalani'opu'u school, South Point and on the ocean outside Hilo. Over 130 crew members from voyaging canoe programs around the state attended the hands-on workshop. Additionally, twenty educators from around Hawaii island participated in a teacher training workshop co-instructed and assisted by crew members who completed the prior workshop.

After a night under the night sky at Ka Lae, the group returned to Nawahi for breakfast and some rest. The morning was spent working on obtaining Na anana kino, or hand and arm measurements, and basic knot and rope work. After lunch at the school, the group moved back to 'Imiloa Astronomy Center to continue developing skills in drafting a reference course line, and clues to landfall. |

We start our third day of the workshop at Radio Bay in Hilo, where six small double-hulled coastal sailing canoes, a six-man outrigger canoe, several one-man outrigger canoes were launched to join Hokualaka'i in the waters in and outside Hilo Bay. Crew members were taught sail theory and practicum by the captains of their respective canoes. Light winds and a calm sea made for a relaxing time on the water.
