The long-awaited, much-anticipated opening of the Imiloa Astronomy Center took place over February 2006. There were open house events for community groups including Hawaiian kupuna, family and friends, Mauna Kea Observatories, UH Hilo and Hawaii Community College, educators from public, private and charter schools and the hospitality industry. A gala banquet honoring the Senator Daniel Inouye was held the evening preceding the Dedication and Blessing on Monday, February 20.
