How did you get into robotics?
After helping with "solar car racing" on Oahu, I wanted to volunteer my skills in helping the students of the Big Island in robotics. I was told about Cindy Fong, and her ROV program, and I made myself available.
Can you describe some of the robots you've built?
In my spare time, I build racecars and race engines which I feel helps me design and construct robots. As the owner of KapuRacing.com, I was asked to help in the "solar car race" on Oahu. The only complete robot I have built was HELCO's ROV, which I was part of a team.
What do you enjoy about designing and building robots?
I enjoy the "technical" side of robots. Teaching the students of the Big Island computer design, programing, and the basic theory of electricity, and then watching them incorporate it into a robot is total satisfaction.
Where do you see the future of robot design, construction and implementation?
Robots are the future in every part of life from underwater exploration, to planet exploration. In the future, robots will cook our meals, clean our home, and repair our cars!
What does RoboFest mean to you?
Robofest is my chance to assist and observe the children of our future working with technology of today.
How can young people prepare themselves for, and get involved in robotics?
Starting in grade school, young students can get involved by taking science and engineering classes. With the power of the Internet, each student also has the resources to learn about the latest in cutting edge technology and how it makes everyday life a little more interesting.
