Where are you from, where do you live, and what school do you attend?
I live in Hilo, also where I was born. I attend Hilo High School. I have completed 9th grade. I also participated in Hilo Intermediate School's robotics club and helped at Hilo Youth Robotics.
How did you get into robotics?
There was a program in Future Flight that dealt with Lego
Mindstorms. I participated in it and from that my interest in robotics sparked.
Describe some of the robots you've built
I've built a few robots with Lego Mindstorms. However, the ROV (Remote Operated/Ocean Vehicle) was the most memorable bot. The time our team at Hilo Intermediate Robotics spent designing and building it is probably why it means so much to me.
What do you enjoy about designing and building robots?
I really enjoy robotics because you can do just about anything you want so long as you stay within nature's parameters. Plus, robotics is such a wide field of things from windup toys to Mars rovers so there's a great variety of things possible.
Where do you see the future of robot design, construction and implementation?
I believe robotics is a huge part of our future. Technology has advanced to the point where cars park themselves and robots deactivate bombs. This trend in robotics will probably continue. Since robotics is being applied to everything from medical to environmental issues, it is safe to say that robotics will both change and aid human life in the short future.
What does RoboFest mean to you?
For me, RoboFest is an opportunity for anyone interested in robotics to learn new things, exchange ideas, and have fun with other people that share the same interest.
How can young people prepare themselves for, and get involved in robotics?
Study hard in Math and Science, but most importantly keep an open mind and be creative. Also, since robotics isn't only designing and building robots, but also writing and researching, other subjects are important too.
