Where are you from, and where do you live?
I'm from Manoa, Honolulu, Roosevelt grad. I live in
Mountain View, HI now with my kids.
What is your professional & educational background?
I'm an elementary science teacher for Nawahiokalani'opu'u Iki Public Charter Hawaiian
Immersion School in Kea'au, where all of the instruction is conducted in the Hawaiian language.
How did you get into robotics?
My son Kaiapuni (Louis) mentioned to me when he was 9 years old that he wanted to be an engineer so I looked
for programs to support that. I took him to a robotics workshop that summer at HPM and also hooked up with Suzy Sanxter doing FIRST Lego League (FLL).
Describe some of the robots you or your students have built
Last year the Nawahi FLL team built a robot with the RCX brick that could pick things up and drop things into places and also push things. It had diffferent attachments that could be swapped during the 2.5 minutes of the competition.
This year's FLL Power Challenge seems to have a lot of missions that require pushing so the kids are each
taking one mission and designing a robot to do just that one mission and if we can find one that performs consistently then that's the one we'll take to the competition.
What do you enjoy about designing and building robots?
I enjoy seeing the kids completely engaged and focussed in a hands-on, challenging mental acrobatics and fully enjoying it, and I enjoy seeing them inspired to explore math and science as a result.
Where do you see the future of robot design, construction and implementation?
It?s a great way to inspire children to want to increase their knowledge in all areas.
What does RoboFest mean to you?
It?s great to have a local festival because it's challenging enough to get a robot up and running, much less try to get hotel and car etc. for a Honolulu trip.
How can young people prepare themselves for, and get involved in robotics?
Go to the websites (list some) to read about it, see who the people in your area are who are doing it, and get advice from them.
