1 Earth 1 Universe • Semiahmoo
August 30 - September 2, 2005 • Blaine, Washington |
|||||||||||||||
| This conference took place at the Semiahmoo Hotel in Blaine, Washington, just a few miles south of the Canadian border. Many of the attendees of the previous conference were present at this event, and it was wonderful seeing them again. In a continuation of the previous conference in Santa Fe, NM, we will explore the concepts of resonance, alignment, harmony and balance within the "learning bundle" that is native science. I can never obtain complete knowledge and understanding, but through my experiences with this group, hope to grasp better insight into sensitivity and respect that should be afforded Native indigenous peoples in Hawaii, and the world over. Secondarily, I hope to cultivate partnerships with other outreach people here on projects that can enrich my community back home.
One Earth, One Universe is a collaboration between the Native Science Academy and the NASA Science Mission Directorate. The workshop brings professional researchers and educators trained in Western science together with Native American scholars who were both traditionally and university trained (split-brained). The participants work on developing a learning community in which divergent views about the nature and practice of science could be embraced. |

| Dear Friends: Thank you, all of you, for a most meaningful week at Semiahmoo. Sakej's closing words, when he thanked "NASA" for just being willing to listen, are still ringing in my ears. It is we who really owe thanks to all of the Native American Science Academy members who gave so much of themselves to us. It is a rare privilege and honor to have been taken so deeply into Native ways. Yes, it was just a glimpse of all that there is, but it was a deeply moving glimpse. We have come to a place that lies far beyond our initial worries about a few space missions; we have come to confront the very future of Mother Earth herself. Nothing could be more important. Let us hold these days in our hearts and prayers until we can meet again. In peace, from a vantage point 30,000 feet above Mother Earth, Phil |
