Vesta in Volcano

“Vesta in Volcano:  An Evening of Asteroids” was hosted by the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy (IfA) and the Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  Special guest speaker, Mary Beth Laychak of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) presented an “Asteroids: A to Z” lesson complete with an exciting media presentation and an asteroid identification activity with home-made baked goods.  Mary Beth, a service observer and outreach coordinator for CFHT, was able to engage every age group among the 150 people present.  Following the presentation, IfA’s Community Outreach Assistant, Kenyan

Beals, led the group outside for a stargazing and constellation tour second to none.  With telescopes set up revealing Vesta, Jupiter, Saturn, and various other night sky objects, the attendees were treated to a full night of astronomy education.  We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Mary Beth and KMC for helping to provide such an excellent program.

Up in the sky...is it a bird, is it a plane, no its Vesta!
